Rules I: Costume Construction

Commissioned, purchased, rented, or commercially made costumes will be allowed to enter the contest, but will not be eligible for the grand prize. To be eligible for the Grand Prize, the creator of the costume should have constructed a minimum of 60% of the costume. A portion of the costume (such as a leotard, tights and shoes) may be from purchased finished goods, but If you have made heavy alterations to a store-bought garment and wish to enter it into the contest, you must be able to explain how you have altered it and the processes that such an endeavor entailed.
*Unaltered store-bought assemblies of clothing to represent a "costume" are NOT allowed.

For safety reasons and to have the event go smoothly, we are not allowing the entry of costumes that require assistance on stage or that a contestant is unable to walk at a normal pace while wearing (such as use of stilts).

Rules II: Costume Weapon Policy

A COSTUME WEAPON IS *NOT* PERMITTED IF

  • It fires or can fire any sort of projectile. (Nerf guns are only allowed if they have been deactivated and cannot fire)
  • It is airsoft, even if deactivated
  • It looks like a real firearm at "second glance." (Yes, even if it's a kid's toy.)
  • It's sharp or pointy enough to cut or pierce someone with moderate pressure. This includes all real swords, daggers and knives. It also includes ceramic blades, needles, syringes and anything that can pierce such as a Little Sister syringe made of wood or other non-pliable material.
Please note that Little Sister syringes that are made of wood are not allowed because you might accidentally poke someone, especially in the crowded Expo hall. If the syringe part is made of rubber or other soft, pliable material instead it could be acceptable. If in doubt, see a PAX official for peace bonding.
  • Bats are allowed as long as you don't go around hitting people with them. Always adhere to laws, mores, and customary rules of society.
  • Foam props are perfectly acceptable and are very popular. These are a good choice since they can't hurt, can be made to look very good, and are totally accepted by the convention center and TSA.

Rules III: Peace Bonding at PAX and Other Conventions for Costume Weapons

The method of checking will be a booth or location designated by PAX Prime prior to the event. See the respective event details as if you cannot meet event rules and regulations for costume weapons, then you will not be able to for the contest. The station will be staffed by event members from 1 hour prior to the show to the close of Expo Hall. All attendees who have costume weapons will be directed there.

Anyone who has a costume weapon needs to be verified. NO EXCEPTIONS!

Attendees whose weapons are allowed will have to show that they have been checked and Ok'd. If an attendee's weapon is approved they will receive (dependent on event) BOTH a colored zip tie placed on the weapon and a sticker on the back of their badge with a short description of the item and the name of the Event member who checked it. Any Enforcer can verify to if the weapon has been checked and that you have a sticker and zip tie on it. Please note that zip ties will be placed on the prop in an area of your choice. It must remain secure but it can be in an area that can be covered for photos.

If you bring something in that's not allowed or not approved you will be politely required to leave, stow the offending item in your vehicle/hotel room/etc, and then return. If you have any doubt as to whether your prop weapon falls under these restrictions — it probably does. Err on the side of caution! We do not want individuals to have to compete with costumes missing important features.

If your weapon does not pass peace bonding but you use it in competition, you will be disqualified and asked to leave. (Obviously we don't want this. So please make sure your weapons follow all PAX rules.)

Rules IV: Presentation and Stage Etiquette:

This is a family friendly contest. Content should not go beyond PG-13.

  • Offensive language of any kind is not allowed — no racial or sexual epithets; no profanity, etc.
  • No excessive violence.
  • No sexual activity or contact — real or implied.
  • All sexual jokes and innuendo must have a non-sexual interpretation that is at least as obvious as the sexual one.
  • No nudity — ALL costumes must adhere to the official PAX rules.
  • No yaoi, yuri, or hentai.
  • Be clever, not crass! If you think your costume or presentation might be too risqué or offensive, it probably is.

Contestants may not use stage time to make political, religious, insulting, or other demonstrations not related to their entry.

  • You may surprise the audience, but NEVER SURPRISE THE CREW.
  • No fire, flame, smoke, fog, dry ice, wind machines, lasers, pressurized gases or liquids.
  • No messy substances — wet, dry, or oily — in the Strife Lounge or on stage.
  • No jumping on or off stage — please use the officially designated stage entrances and exits.
  • Leave the stage as clean as it was when you set foot on it. Arrange to remove all items you brought on stage at the end of your presentation.
